Online Communities Helping Abused Animals

The stories online that expose the horrors of animal abuse are sometimes difficult to handle. Many people choose not to pay attention to abuse because it is upsetting, however, the abuse is still going on whether they pay attention or not. More awareness has been given to this problem through online social media sites, and by displaying individual abuse cases, it is giving a face to the problem of abuse. The result is that there has been a rising tide of activism toward the awareness and prevention of animal abuse. Facebook in particular seems to be creating a strong network of people who are dedicated to helping these animals, and stories are showing up from shelters, veterinary hospitals, and individual experiences that give a name and face to the abuse. It gives it a more compelling personal connection to that animal, and the result has been a much higher rate of rescues, rehabilitation, prosecution of abusers, and public awareness.
